E. PATRICIA SALEM

E. Patricia (Murphy) Salem, 89, passed away peacefully May 25, 2003, at a Lincoln nursing home.

She was born in Fort Kent, April 10, 1914, the daughter of James and Mary (Robichaud) Murphy.

As a young woman, Pat worked at the Eagle Lake Hospital in Eagle Lake. She left Fort Kent during the depression to work at the People’s Laundry in Biddeford, later returning home to Fort Kent, where she worked for Jake Etscovitz for many years.

She came to Millinocket in 1935, where she met her husband. After a courtship of two weeks, they were married at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church by Father Hogan. Pat and her husband owned and operated Salem’s Grocery Store in Millinocket for 42 years, retiring in 1977.

She was a communicant of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church and a Past Regent of the Little Flower Circle Daughters of Isabella No. 392. Pat also worked in local town affairs, such as the cemetery commission, and often assisted those in need, including the March of Dimes and Multiple Sclerosis Society. Pat did welfare work with the late Bernice Buck, delivering food baskets and clothes. She also worked for her church as the chairman of suppers and speak-easy minstrel and bazaars. Pat was a contributor to katahdin Senior Retirees, Meals for Me, and to her church toward the new organ in Gertrude Levasseur’s memory. Pat also helped Dr. Young deliver babies.

She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Fred Salem, in 1999; and also predeceased by her brother, Leonard Joseph Murphy, as well as her two sisters, Albertine McIntyre and Bernadine Chasse.

She is survived by two daughters, Sandra M. Haven of Millinocket and Freda May Rouleau and her husband, Peter Rouleau, of Medway; one son, John W. Salem of Clearwater, Florida; two granddaughters, Kimberly Marie Haven and her husband, Barry Hodgkin of Scarborough, and Patti Jo McLaughlin, and her husband, Blaine, of Medway; four grandsons, William Haven and friend, Christina, Todd and wife Christine Haven of Binghamton, New York, Scott and wife, Kelly Haven, of Wallkill, New York and Peter Rouleau and wife, April, of Millinocket; fourteen great-grandchildren, Casey Jo McLaughlin, Breonna Haven, Shane Rouleau, Mac McLaughlin, Paige Rouleau, Austin Scott Haven, Makayla Marie Haven, Nikole and Kasey Jo McLaughlin, Taylor and Sam Hodgkin, Heather M. Josette F., and Brooke A.; two sisters, Theresa Cyr of Pilesgrove, New Jersey, Nathalie and her husband, Richard McGibbon, of Millinocket; two brothers, Medley and wife, Germaine Murphy, and Leo James and wife Leola Murphy, all of Augusta; also many nieces and nephews, and many special friends.

Friends may call at R.L. Bouchard Funeral Home, 11 Tamarack Street, Millinocket from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. May 27, 2003. Little Flower Circle Daughters of Isabella will recite the rosary at 3 p.m. at the funeral home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 p.m. at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church.
