I would like to send out a report on a local mail carrier. She is very faithful to deliver the mail, every day, in all types of weather. Her route is about seven miles long, and much of that has to be walked, carrying a mailbag that can weigh 35 pounds or more. She seems always to have a kind word along the way.
The winters here, as you know, can be very harsh, but this year has been excruciating. Many times she has driven to work at 5:00 a.m. in miserably undrivable conditions, risking life and limb to get the mail through. The cold temperatures are bad enough but the biting winds bring that chill factor so low that it has to be a sin to be out in it. Her fingers crack open, and that becomes very painful. The only thing she has to look forward to some days is “quitting time” at the end of another bitterly cold day.
If Ruth Gould happens to be your mail carrier, let her know how much you appreciate her, and maybe offer her some hot coffee or tea along the way.
Thanks, Raymond Kemp
Editor’s Note: Amen to that. Ruth is my mail carrier, and I couldn’t ask for better.
